PURPOSE: Recently, activating mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene were discovered in non-small cell lung cancers sensitive to gefitinib (ZD1839, an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor) but not in gefitinib-resistant cancers.
