Multiple factors are incriminated in the etiopathogeny of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants, including oral feeding, vascular abnormalities, increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inappropriate response of the intestinal barrier to bacterial microflora.
