AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The proinflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha has been implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and variation in the gene encoding TNF-alpha (TNF) has shown inconsistent associations with susceptibility to both conditions.
