Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) modulate their phenotype between proliferative and differentiated states in response to physiological and pathological cues. Insulin-like growth factor-I stimulates differentiation of SMCs by activating phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt signaling.
