Somatic inactivation of NFKBIA, the gene encoding IkappaBalpha, is a frequent occurrence in the malignant Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Impairment of IkappaBalpha function results in deregulated NF-kappaB activity, a characteristic of HRS cells.
