There is a growing interest in the use of thiopurines (azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioguanine) for the management of inflammatory bowel disease. The genetically controlled thiopurine (S)-methyltransferase enzyme is involved in the metabolism of these agents and is hypothesised to determine the clinical response to thiopurines.
