BACKGROUND: Excessive flux through the polyol pathway has long been thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic microvascular complications. Aldose reductase (AR) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme in the pathway that catalyses the reduction of glucose to sorbitol.
