Skeletal cells synthesize insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and their binding proteins (IGFBP). The effects of IGFBP-5 on bone cell growth and osteoblastic function are controversial, and transgenic mice overexpressing IGFBP-5 exhibit osteopenia.
