The Escherichia coli DNA repair enzyme endonuclease VIII (EndoVIII or Nei) excises oxidized pyrimidines from damaged DNA substrates. It overlaps in substrate specificity with endonuclease III and may serve as a back-up for this enzyme in E. coli.
