Guanylyl cyclase-activating proteins (GCAPs) are Ca2+-binding proteins that activate guanylyl cyclase when free Ca2+ concentrations in retinal rods and cones fall after illumination and inhibit the cyclase when free Ca2+ reaches its resting level in the dark.
