The alpha-abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) M variants show physiological properties different from the beta-abnormal Hb M variants, that is, extremely low oxygen affinity of the normal subunit and extraordinary resistance to both enzymatic and chemical reduction of the abnormal met-subunit.
