The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are required for the development of ventral mesoderm, which contributes to the ventral blood island and primitive (yolk sac stage) hematopoiesis. Primitive erythropoiesis is defective when BMP signaling is blocked during gastrulation of Xenopus embryos.
