Elevated levels of plasma homocysteine (Hcy), a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD), can result from genetic errors, e.g., the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphism, or nutritional deficiencies, e.g., in vitamin B12 and folate.
