PURPOSE: The Upjohn Pharmaceuticals Limited (UPL) rat is a unique model for cataracts, which are inherited as an autosomal semidominant trait and expressed as early-onset (E-type) cataracts in homozygotes and as late-onset (L-type) cataracts in heterozygotes.
