BACKGROUND: Tobacco exposure is an established risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Benzo[alpha]pyrene diol expoxide (BPDE), a main metabolic product of the tobacco smoke constituent benzo[alpha]pyrene, induces chromosomal aberrations at specific loci.
