OBJECTIVES: Olfactory receptor neurons undergo apoptosis at a baseline rate, probably secondary to environmental damage even in the absence of gross disease. The study demonstrates age-related changes in expression of genes known to regulate apoptosis in the rat olfactory mucosa.
