The TGF-beta superfamily consists of an array of ligands including BMP, TGF-beta, activin, and nodal subfamilies. The extensive range of biological effects elicited by TGF-beta family signaling is due in part to the large numbers and promiscuity of types I and II TGF-beta family member receptors.
