A case-control design study was used to investigate the association of maternal HIV-1 phenotype in MT-2 cells at or near the time of delivery with perinatal transmission of HIV-1, controlling for maternal CD4 percentage and duration of rupture of membranes, in 48 transmitting and 96 non-transmitting HIV-1-infected mothers who gave birth between 1990 and 1995.
