Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a central role in the life and death of pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Treatment of neonatal or adult rats with a VEGF receptor blocker destroys lung capillaries by inducing endothelial cell apoptosis and causes emphysema.
