Hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferases (HPRTs) are of biomedical interest because defects in the enzyme from humans can result in gouty arthritis or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, and in parasites these enzymes are potential targets for antiparasite chemotherapy.
