PURPOSE: Humans with retinitis pigmentosa and dogs with progressive rod-cone degeneration (prcd) have lower than normal blood levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the major fatty acid found in retinal rod outer segments (ROS).
