The ubiquitously expressed basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)-PAS protein ARNT (arylhydrocarbon receptor nuclear transporter) forms transcriptionally active heterodimers with a variety of other bHLH-PAS proteins, including HIF-1alpha (hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha) and AHR (arylhydrocarbon receptor).
