Dysentery caused by Shigella species is characterized by infiltration of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) into the colonic mucosa. Shigella spp. evolved into pathogens by the acquisition of virulence genes and by the deletion of 'antivirulence' genes detrimental to its pathogenic lifestyle.
