A dysfunctional glutamatergic system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The group III metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) types 7 and 8 presynaptically inhibit glutamate release, thereby modulating glutamatergic transmission in the brain.
