The formation and stability of epithelial tissue involves cell adhesion and the connection of the intermediate filaments of contiguous cells, mediated by desmosomes. The cadherin family members Desmocollins (Dsc) and Desmogleins (Dsg) mediate desmosome extracellular adhesion.
