The most frequent genetic causes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) determined so far are mutations occurring in the gene for copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD). The mechanism may involve inappropriate formation of hyroxyl radicals, peroxynitrite or malfunctioning of the SOD protein.
