A new genetic locus, epi-1, has been identified and mapped, which affects epithelialization of various tissues in the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Seven independent epi-1 mutant alleles have been obtained. These mutants have a wide spectrum of abnormalities, all seem to be caused by a primary defect of basement membrane.
