Canine red cells have a high affinity Na(+)/K(+)-dependent glutamate transporter. We herein demonstrate that this transport is mediated by the canine homologue of glutamate/aspartate transporter (GLAST), one of the glutamate transporter subtypes abundant in the central nervous system.
