Interleukin-6 (IL-6)-deficient mice were found to be much more sensitive to liver injury by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) than mice with an intact IL-6 system. At doses of CCl4 ranging from 2 to 3.5 ml/kg body weight, mean mortality in the IL-6 gene knockout (IL-6-/-) mice was 71% at 24 hours versus 12% in normal IL-6+/+ mice.
