<h4>ABSTRACT</h4> <h4>Background</h4> Mitochondrial (Mito) dysfunction in IBD reduces mucosal O2 consumption and increases O2 delivery to the microbiome. Increased enteric O2 promotes blooms of facultative anaerobes (eg. Proteobacteria ) and restricts obligate anaerobes (eg. Firmicutes ).
