<h4>Background</h4> Short tandem repeats (STRs) and homopolymers are among the most mutable loci in the human genome. Despite their presumed mutability owing to replication slippage, homopolymer loci exhibit lower mutation rates and minimal paternal age effects compared to other STRs.
