Sleep is a universally conserved behavior with an elusive origin and an uncertain evolutionary purpose. Leveraging phylogenomics, we investigate the evolutionary foundations of sleep by identifying orthologs of Human sleep-related genes in the Lokiarchaeota of the Asgard superphylum.
