ABCA4 is an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter predominantly expressed in photoreceptors where it transports the substrate N-retinylidene-phosphatidylethanolamine across disc membranes thereby facilitating the clearance of retinal compounds from photoreceptor outer segments.
