OBJECTIVE: Articular cartilage affected by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition contains abnormal chondrocytes with morphologic similarities to the terminally differentiated hypertrophic chondrocytes that mineralize in growth plate cartilage.
