We report the cloning of a gene, S2P, that encodes a putative metalloprotease required for intramembrane proteolysis of sterol-regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) at Site-2. SREBPs are membrane-bound transcription factors that activate genes regulating cholesterol metabolism.
