Receptor tyrosine kinase-mediated activation of the Raf-1 protein kinase is coupled to the small guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-binding protein Ras. By contrast, protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated activation of Raf-1 is thought to be Ras independent.
