Genetic recombination catalyzed by lambda's Red pathway was studied in rec+ and recA mutant bacteria by examining both intracellular lambda DNA and mature progeny particles. Recombination of nonreplicating phage chromosomes was induced by double-strand breaks delivered at unique sites in vivo.
