BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs disproportionately among individuals of Chinese descent. The cytochrome P450 2E1 enzyme (CYP2E1) is known to activate nitrosamines and other carcinogens that are possibly involved in the development of this disease.
