Piperacillin resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae was mediated by mutations in a novel gene, cpoA, that also confer transformation deficiency and a decrease in penicillin-binding protein la. cpoA is part of an operon located downstream of the primary sigma factor of S. pneumoniae.
