Non-mucoid mutants of a Klebsiella pneumoniae wild type strain CG43 were generated by transposon mutagenesis. One of the mutants was incapable of fermenting galactose and was designated CG43-17. Alterations of the bacterial surface including capsule, lipopolysaccharides, and several species of outer membrane proteins were noted.
