Microsatellites are highly polymorphic, short-tandem repeat sequences dispersed throughout the genome. Instability of these repeat sequences at multiple genetic loci may result from mismatch repair errors and occur in hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma and certain sporadic cancers.
