In the hin-mediated DNA inversion system, HU facilitates formation of the synaptic complex composed of two recombination sites spaced 996 bp apart and of the enhancer situated between them, by looping the DNA as to promote interaction of Hin invertase with the Fis enhancer factor [Johnson et al., Nature 329 (1987) 462-465].
