Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in which acquisition of mecA [which encodes the cell wall peptidoglycan biosynthesis component penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a)] confers resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, is of major clinical concern.
