Infections with Enterobacterales (E) are increasingly difficult to treat due to antimicrobial resistance. After ceftriaxone replaced chloramphenicol (CHL) as empiric therapy for suspected sepsis in Malawi in 2004, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-E rapidly emerged.
