BACKGROUND: The etiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) involves a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Previous observational studies have revealed that higher leptin levels are related to a lower risk of developing NAFLD, but the causative association remains unknown.
