BACKGROUND: Decreased expression of the T cell receptor (TCR) ζ-chain has been reported in autoimmune diseases. Recent evidence suggests that this deficiency may be due to polymorphisms in the CD3Z (CD247) gene and/or due to promoter hypermethylation.
