High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) is a noncardiogenic form of pulmonary edema, which is induced upon exposure to hypobaric hypoxia at high altitude (HA). Hypobaric hypoxia generates reactive oxygen species that may damage telomeres and disturb normal physiological processes.
