Suppressor mutations were isolated that obviate the requirement for essential PBP2b in peripheral elongation of peptidoglycan from the midcells of dividing Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 background cells. One suppressor was in a gene encoding a single KH-domain protein (KhpA).
