OBJECTIVES: Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1) is a key regulator of the genes involved in the cellular response to hypoxia. Overexpression of HIF-1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and functional polymorphisms of the HIF1A gene may confer susceptibility to RCC.
