Immediately following ischemia, glutamate accumulates in the extracellular space and results in extensive stimulation of its receptors including N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionic acid (AMPA) receptors.
